Rare & Very Cool Collector's Chronograph - All Original - Model Worn By World War II Hero Pilot

Today's Watch of the Week showcases this all original Gallet Multichron, the so-called Don Blakelee model. I just picked it up a couple of weeks ago and we've already serviced it - it's a watch I've been keen to own. In fact, it's on my wrist as I'm typing this.

Partly due to military requirements, the late 1930's and early 1940's were an important period for the development of technically advanced chronographs. As a mid-sized watch manufacturer Gallet & Co. was a specialist, focusing on creating chronographs of superior quality. Her Majesty put Britain's timing needs during World War I into the hands of the company's wristwatches, selecting them as its first chronograph supplier in 1916.

Building on the success of their wartime timepieces, the Swiss firm grew into a significant supplier to the world's armed forces.

Of the many watches produced by Gallet in last 120 years, the MultiChron chronographs are arguable the most historical important and collectible today. Originally designed as a tool watch for military and technical uses, many featured a decimal, tachometer, telemeter, or pulsometer track on the dial. It could be used for military artillery timing, auto racing, and aviation, medical, and sporting uses.

Introduced in 1923, the Regulator version of the MultiChron marked another achievement for the company.

This one is a very cool and rare MultiChron Regulator 2nd series - and the model named after Colonel Blakelee who holds the distinction of being the most decorated second world war US Army Air Force fighter pilot.

It remains in beautiful condition and doesn't look like it has been used extensively. Its case is near mint plus and doesn't look like it has ever been polished. Its dial is in honest original condition with even spotting just do to age.

Its cool "olive" pushers and knurled winding crown are all in excellent condition. Our watchmaker has freshly cleaned and oiled it. The chronograph works perfectly and crisply resets to exact zero.

Like always included with the purchase is a one-year C.O.T. warranty on the movement and its function, a custom printed Connoisseur of Time Certificate of Authenticity, and a new timing certificate attesting to its performance.

Colonel Don Blakeslee:
The tools of the trade for WWII fighter ace Col. Don Blakeslee were his North American P-51 Mustang fighter and Gallet MultiChron Regulator wrist watch.

He was born in Fairport Harbor, Ohio a small lakeside town on the outskirts of Cleveland in 1917 and began his career in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1940. He was commissioned on the 17th of March 1941 and on the 4th of April was transferred to the Royal Air Force overseas, first piloting the British Supermarine Spitfire then the North American P-51 Mustang with the Eighth USAAF. Blakeslee flew more combat missions against the German Luftwaffe than any other American pilot during World War II with an official record of 14.5 / 3 / 11. He was known to have passed “kills” to new pilots on occasion, making it likely his score was somewhat higher.

“The Mighty Eighth – Russian Shuttle” by Gil Cohen
A painting by Gil Cohen entitled “The Mighty Eighth – Russian Shuttle” was the only artistic work officially approved by Col Blakeslee. It depicts his arrival in Ukraine after navigating the 4th Fighter Group across Germany and Eastern Europe using only a map on his knee and his Gallet wrist watch. Blakeslee is seen pointing to his wrist watch, indicating his on time arrival to the minute after the arduous seven and a half hour journey across hostile Europe.

On his passing in 2008, the Guardian wrote and obituary detailing the exploits and heroism of the no nonsense American ace.
